My Grandma's bedroom set.
Growing up going to my Grandma's house everyone always wanted to stay in the special room. It was perfect. Made for a princess. Flawless. ... Or so we thought back then.
My sister called me several years back asking if I wanted our Grandma's bedroom set that she was finished using. Of course I jumped at the chance for not just FREE furniture, but THIS furniture! They even delivered it! Score!
As soon as my husband saw it, he freaked out and said he wouldn't allow it in the house... HA!
And so began my obsession with furniture refinishing...
The Process:
1. Ripped off all the old nasty upholstery.
2. Sanded with fine sand paper (since the piece was so old it didn't need a ton of sanding).
3. Painted with Behr Ultra (primer and paint in one)
4. Glazed
5. For the upholstery: I bought new foam, cut it to the size of the old piece, covered it in batting, then fabric and used a staple gun to staple it to the bottom. Then we (my sister in law helped me with the reupholstering, this was my very first experience with upholstering!) stapled the back panel of fabric on, stuffed it as we stapled, and hot glued the decorative ribbon stuff (can't think of its name right now! ha!) around the edges.
This piece was done a while ago and I never thought to take pictures of the process, so for a full tutorial on upholstering basic seats, check out my RED CHAIR TUTORIAL HERE.
This chair came with a complete bedroom set that now belongs to my daughter. It was my very first attempt at refinishing furniture, but I think it turned out great and surprisingly we still love it :) (I'm patting myself on the back!) Sometime I'll get around to taking pictures of it for you!

ReplyDeleteI just found this blog and LOVE what you've done with this chair! I am just curious, what did you use for a glaze? What did you wipe it down with and how long did you wait? Sorry for so many questions, but I really liked the outcome on your work! Thank you for sharing it! 4362karen
ReplyDeleteThis puts a spin on comfort food to comfort furniture! I loved my Grandma....still do only now she's not here to love in person. Having her things makes me feel like she's still very much a part of my life. Thanks for sharing. Hope you did this with all that furniture, and will post a photo of the whole thing.
