paint guns 101

Ashley and I have received several requests by readers asking us, "How do you use our paint spray gun?" We both use this tool often, for many of our projects.  Paint spray guns allow for efficiency, saving time and providing a smooth finish, free from brush strokes.  As far as which gun is best to purchase, that completely depends on your price range.  In my opinion, it's fine to start out with a less expensive gun.   Most lower end guns found at Home Depot or Lowe's get the job done just fine.  The gun I use is a Husky, it cost around $50, we have had this gun for 2 years and it has been great through hundreds of furniture projects.  Plus I don't often find myself wishing I had spent more money.

I had the man explain the components of his paint spray gun, so you can see just how easy it is to use.
Hope this helps those looking to expand their skills in the paint department.  Please email us if you have any questions.

  1. Thanks for sharing this video...and thank 'the man' too, he did a great job. I have a couple of questions: I'm curious how much coverage you get from that one container of paint. Is it enough to do that dresser? What type of paints have you used in your sprayer?...Thanks again, very informative and I 'liked' you on MMS....Coreen

  2. I don't know exactly I would need to look up the specs on that specific gun but I would guess about 10 square feet per coat. I was able to do almost that entire dresser by filling up my gun one time. I think you actually SAVE paint using a gun because the paint goes on evenly and very thinly while still giving the piece good coverage. I think more is waisted on a brush or roller that both soak up a lot of paint that is never transferred to the item being painted. Plus a lot of paint is waisted in the paint pan. I have used spatulas before on my paint containers just to save a little paint here and there. But with a gun you have to first thin the paint out with water so your can of paint goes farther. I have used only latex and oil based paints with my gun but I bet you could use chalk paint too. I just have yet to try it.

    Thanks for the inquiry!
