A few months ago I saw this beauty out on the curb....
So I made my husband go over and get it before the garbage man came :). He thought it was my most ridiculous project yet. It probably was, but at least it was fun! ...
HOW TO TURN THIS.................INTO THIS!
SUPPLIES:
sand paper
primer
spray paint
painters tape
measuring tape
painters tape
pencil
sealer (opt.)
1. Sand just enough to rough up the surface
2. Prime (I used Kilz spray primer)
3. Spray paint base color all over (I did the white first)
4. Measure and tape. I used the tape to do the measuring. Cover the drawer with tape and remove every other piece. Use your thumbs to firmly press down all the tape to make sure paint doesn't seep through.
5. Spray paint other color (in my case, it was the brown).
6. Remove tape while paint is still a tiny bit wet (that way the paint doesn't stick to the tape and peel off)...
7. Do the same with the base or use a measuring tape and pencil to get exact lines.
8. Seal if needed (I used Minwax Polycrylic)
9. Add hardware when piece is dry. I replaced the old hardware with handles I had from a previous dresser. I painted the hardware using THIS method.

I love the asymmetrical lines and the diverse widths. So fun to look at. Jourdan
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing, you have such vision!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) Since it was such a piece, I decided 'why not try something fun? If it's a bomb I can always throw it back in the trash!' :)

ReplyDeleteyour lines are perfect! i did stripes recently and the lines were all fuzzy, even though i used the special blue tape. come to find out there's a trick to it, though it seems like you made it work on your own! here's the trick, in any case: after putting down the tape over the base color, paint the base color over the top of the tape again. that way, if the paint is going to seep, it's the base color that seeps. then the tape is all painted down and sealed, so after that dries you go ahead and paint the stripe color right over the top of that! dry. peel tape. smooth lines. ta-da! maybe yours worked better because you used spray paint and i was using a roll brush? could be.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great tip! I have run into this same problem before when painting patterns onto walls. It's a little extra work to use the technique you described but totally worth it.
Delete@Katilda- thanks for the advice! Also, for some reason the green frog tape is better than the blue. I think it's stickier or something, so next time try that. But yes, painting lines can be a pain! :) Spray painting is nice because it's such a quick, thin layer that it doesn't affect the tape as much, where with brushes or rollers you're going over the tape with a much thicker, heavier coat. Thanks for the info! :) .. Ashley @ LYB

ReplyDeleteRevamping a filing cabinet isn't that simple. That's why I give so much respect to those who do it and finish it with great and amazing results. I'd love to do that too on my 3 drawer filing cabinet. Thanks for sharing.
