White French Dresser

Ashley and I have been working like crazy to get ready for the upcoming
Junk In The Trunk Vintage Market on May 5th in Scottsdale, AZ.
We are so excited and hope to cram in as many pieces as possible into our 15 X 15 patch of concrete.
This upcoming week we will be posting some of the items we have saved up for the event.
First up...
3 drawer french style dresser.

I was so excited about the detail of this dresser I wanted to do something fun with it.
Stain, colorful paint, the whole shebang.
As you can see my plan was poorly executed.
But I finally figured out what to do with this thing after a long hair pulling, nail biting, toe stubbing, ice-cream binging process.
Originally I was going to stain the whole thing ebony.
 I changed my mind.
Paint was the way to go.
I tried a little of this and that.
Left the top stained.
I ended up with THIS wretched thing.
Um yeah... that just plain sucks.
Too stark?
The knobs look ridiculous?
What the heck am I doing wrong?
So I thought I would try a little sanding, AGAIN!
Ahhhhh, NO, gosh dang it. Crud.
(********)
you can fill in the rest.
Whoa what is that.  Definitely not.
I thought, "OKAY I've got it.  It's the weird in-lay on the top drawer, it's throwing me off".
BONDO is a girls best friend.
Once I had stripped and sanded the whole thing down several times I deiced to stop torturing myself and went with a simple white, a touch of black glaze to border some of the detail and the original knobs painted black.
I got my graphic of coarse from the GRAPHICS FAIRY who truly is a fairy godmother if you ask me.
I don't know another site as useful and wonderfully generous as hers.

I used graphite paper and a little bitty brush to hand paint the graphic on.
I couldn't figure out any better route, so I did it the old fashion way.

P.S. Did I mention this dresser has a sister.
Oh yes, she got the same makeover.
But I still have to apply the graphic, so I'll show and tell her a little later.

P.S.S. My mom is an artist of all sorts, her latest tick... sculpting.
I had to nab this very raw piece when she wasn't looking.
I don't know what she would think about an early preview of her unfinished work.

P.S.S.S. Shop H&M if you prefer cute, cheap, summer shoes.
I'm pretty sure those shoes are the only pinkish items in my closet.

    1. Ok Kathy, so glad you are going to try this. It's pretty easy, it just takes a steady hand. I used graphite paper, or tracing paper to transfer the image onto the furniture. You can get this at the craft store for a couple bucks. I used a tiny brush and watered down acrylic paint and painted the image on by hand. When you look closely, you can tell that the Paris address is hand painted, the very slight imperfections give this piece a realistic vintage feel. In my mind I can picture an old gray haired man, in the early 1900's standing in front of a giant window, hand-lettering a sign onto the storefront of a Paris bakery. Someday I'll see Paris and revel in the history there.

This technique seems ancient with today's access to vinyls and other transfers, I chose a simple text for this reason, so hand painting wouldn't be too difficult.

But, I have seen others use SHARPIES to transfer text onto wood. Here is an example:

I haven't tried this yet and cannot speak to how well it works, but it's an option if the hand painting seems too time consuming.

      Thanks for the inquiry.

  10. You have such a wonderful blog! I am so glad I just came here from Stuff and Nonsense. I must say, this dresser is my favorite, and being the francophile that I am, loved that you added the little wording to the top. This is one of my favorite tricks. The last version was perfect, but I love that you showed all the various ideas.

PS I host a linky party, I would LOVE if you stopped by to link this adorable dresser up. Thanks!

  18. I am redoing a dresser and night stand for my niece. And this is exactly how I envision it turning out. Can you tell me what brand and color white paint you used? Latex or oil? And how did you do the black glazing? I've never used black so I am a little nervous about the technique. Thank so much for your help!
